Charles C. Mitchell is an Alabama Cooperative Extension System
agronomist (soil specialist) and professor in the Auburn University Department
of Agronomy and Soils.
He received the B.S. degree from Birmingham Southern College in Biology (1970),
the M.S. from Auburn University in soil science (1973), and the Ph.D. in soil
fertility from University of Florida (1980). He was director of the Agricultural

to Alabama to work in his current capacity. He was promoted to full professor
in 1995.
Mitchell has authored or coauthored more than 60 book chapters, journal articles,
and technical papers and almost 200 extension circulars and articles. He is
a Certified Professional Soil Scientist and a Certified Crop Advisor, and serves
on the Alabama CCA Board of Directors.
Professionally,
Mitchell conducts nutrient management research and extension soils-related educational
programs.
Mitchell
has been an avid gardener since he was 10 years old and has had a garden everywhere
he has lived. He claims that teaching the “Soils, Plant Nutrition, and Fertilizers” part
of Alabama's Master Gardener Training program is the most satisfying and “fun” part
of his job. “After all,” he states, “most gardeners love to share ideas and experiences,
brag about their successes, and regret their disasters.” Mitchell gardens at
his home near Auburn with his wife, Peggy, and their two dogs. |
