Maggie Lawrence. Host

Maggie Lawrence, the host of Backyard Wisdom, brings to the show 20 years of experience in broadcasting. During the week, she is a communications specialist for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. On many weekends, she can be found working in her garden in Auburn, Alabama.
“ I grew up with two grandmothers who were serious gardeners,” says Maggie. “One adored day lilies and grew a wide variety. Zinnias were my other grandmother’s passion. Add to the mix, my farmer father who always had a huge vegetable garden so I never had a chance to be anything but a gardener.”
But she confesses that she’s not as industrious a gardener as either grandmother.
“ They would take the time to coddle along plants,” she says. “With a full-time job and a young daughter, I don’t have the time or the inclination to nurse finicky plants. I choose hardy shrubs and flowers that can do well even when I’m running short on time.”
Current favorites in her garden are butterfly bush, lantana, pineapple sage, zinnias, and a wide assortment of salvias.
Maggie and her husband, Johnny, are passing the love of gardening and the outdoors to their daughter, Julia. Their yard features a goldfish pond complete with frogs and dragonflies as well as a large number of bird feeders.
“ Julia loves to watch the hummingbirds buzz around the feeders and the butterflies feeding in the zinnias,” Maggie says.
